SUNDAMAGED SKIN: WHAT YOU HAVE TO KNOW ABOUT IT

Summer, sun, sunburn: Especially in the warm season or in the solarium we expose our skin to the dangerous UV rays. Not least because a tanned complexion is considered a special ideal of beauty. But sunburn and excessive exposure to the sun can have irreversible consequences such as pigmentation marks, solar elastosis or even skin cancer. What are the causes of sun-damaged skin? We will explain them to you and tell you how you can soon shine with the sun again!

REASONS FOR SUNDAMAGED SKIN

Sunlight consists of ultraviolet rays (UV rays), which are not visible to the human eye - but can have fatal consequences for the appearance of the skin. Two types in particular have been proven to be responsible for this:

UVA rays: The longer-wave UVA rays are able to penetrate deep into the dermis. There they can destroy the collagen fibres (proteins that provide the skin's elastic framework) and form free radicals (harmful oxygen compounds in cells). The skin dries out, becomes thinner, loses its elasticity and wrinkles form.

UVB rays: UVB rays, on the other hand, do not penetrate as deeply into the skin layers, but are more energetic. They cause the release of melanin (the pigment that makes skin tan), but are also responsible for the development of sunburn.

Although UVA rays have less energy, they are equally intense throughout the day compared to UVB rays and can even penetrate through glass panes and clouds. It is therefore advisable not only to use products containing a sun protection factor when sunbathing, but also to protect the skin in everyday life.

CHARACTERISTICS OF SUNDAMAGED SKIN

The acute and usually quickly visible signs of sun-damaged skin are

• Sunburn
• Skin redness
• Skin irritations
• Itching
• Swelling
• wheals
• Blistering

How quickly the consequences of light-damaged skin become visible through sunburn and the like depends on the individual skin type and the extent to which sunscreen has been used. Dermatologists generally refer to skin ageing caused by UV rays as photoaging (light ageing), which can be determined by

• coarser wrinkles,
• Pigment spots (brownish discoloration of skin areas) and
• of a sagging skin.

The formation of (solar) elastosis is also possible. These are skin changes in the face, neck and on the back of the hand such as wrinkles or a cobblestone-like skin appearance. In the worst case scenario, skin cancer can develop in the long term. If you notice the first signs of UV-damaged skin, you should consult a dermatologist.

TIPS FOR SUNDAMAGED SKIN

"The skin forgets nothing," as the saying goes. And there is some truth in this, because you can no longer reverse the signs of UV-damaged skin. It is therefore essential that you protect your skin by applying sunscreen and avoid sunbathing and solarium as much as possible.

Integrate day creams with a sun protection factor into your beauty routine already in the morning to ward off UV rays. In addition, you can counteract and prevent light-related skin aging with appropriate care: cosmetics containing, for example, Swiss garden cress, vitamin A or hyaluron are recommended. A good choice is A4 DAY WATCH day cream, which acts like a shield against light-induced skin ageing (photoaging) with the help of the SPF 20. A4 FACE CREAM also has a cell-renewing effect and thus stimulates the regeneration of the skin.
